SENSIBLE MODERNISM

Grossman's approach to Swedish modernism struck a chord with single, professional women who felt that she understood their needs and sensibilities. The Grasshopper Lamp has a lithe frame and an elongated conical shade that rotates to direct light where needed.

INSPIRED DESIGN

The classic Cobra Lamp takes its name from the shape of the oval shade, which is reminiscent of a Cobra's neck.

GROUNDBREAKING INNOVATION

Grossman incorporated functions that we now take for granted in a desk lamp, like a flexible arm that pivots and a metal shade that can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing the user a simple way to control and reflect light. The design has become familiar enough that it’s easy to miss just how innovative it was at the time.

RECOGNIZED ICON

The Cobra Lamp was selected in 1950 as part of the inaugural Good Design exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. A press release for the exhibition explained that it was “intended for present-day life, in regard to usefulness, to production methods and materials and to the progressive taste of the day.”

Greta Magnusson GrossmanDesigned by Greta Magnusson Grossman

SWEDEN (July 21, 1906 - August 1999) Born and raised in Sweden, Greta Magnusson Grossman represents a literal link between European design and California modernism. In 1940, after already establishing herself as a designer in Sweden, she and her husband, jazz bandleader Billy Grossman, immigrated to Los Angeles. Grossman’s compact, functional and visually lightweight modern aesthetic appealed to a previously ignored but ever-growing demographic: single, savvy, career-minded women. Grossman was quoted in 1951 as saying that California design “is not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions. It has developed out of our own preference for living in a modern way.” Her own preferences and groundbreaking work as a female designer have become recognizable parts of the visual vocabulary of American modernism.
